Margaret Barrett (YG 1938) died on 26 June 2021. Her 101st birthday would have been on 31 August 2021. She was born in 1920.

She was one of a few women who studied Horticulture at Burnley Horticultural College in the late 1930’s. The 2nd World War was about to start. Both her brothers, John and Ken (my father) were enlisted and fought overseas and were not to return to Australia until the end of the war. John serving in Papua and New Guinea and my father, Ken, 4 years in a Japanese prison in Burma. I think it would have been very difficult for the women at home. This was compounded by her Father’s death in Melbourne in 1944, and her grandfather as well, the same year.

Margaret worked as a medical secretary, CSIRO in Canberra at the time. In the early 1950’s she went to London on a boat, via Perth and the Middle east. She worked in London for several years. In her holidays she bicycled around Europe and travelled extensively. After returning to Australia she went on many trips overseas; in her paperwork I found a photo album with an account of her trip to China, including a certificate indicating her Climb of the Great Wall!

She was a very active bush walker, giving up the walks in her early nineties. The bush was her love and any natural environment was her special place to be.
