Cherry McCardel (MacKay YG 1946) passed away on the 13 August 2019 at 89 years of age.

Cherry was raised by her father Eric, whom her friends later described as severe, good looking, strict and dignified, and her Mutti (Eric’s mother, Matilda). She won a Victorian IQ award as a six year old for her masterly grip of mathematics. Cherry went to Kennon Hall Kindergarten in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn where she grew up and later Tintern where she made many life-long friends. She loved Tintern, but then she also loved learning.

A loyal, fun, warm, kind, generous, intelligent and engaging woman, Cherry enjoyed conversing and performed the role of mother in her own unique way. Cherry could always make others laugh. Her son Sam said of Cherry, “People genuinely loved Mum, despite her faults, she was filled with love and goodwill, and always made time to stay in touch. Although she never broke her habit of being fashionable late, Cherry always dressed well and maintained her dignity, in every situation.”

She made many lifelong friends at Tintern. Maggie Coad (Slocombe YG 1946), whom Cherry met at age 4 years, said, “Once you met Cherry, you would never forget her.” Dorothy “Doffy” Cutler (Arnold YG 1946), one of Cherry’s closest life-long friends from Tintern, gave a Reading at her funeral.

Having excelled at Tintern, Cherry won a place at the University of Melbourne, otherwise known as The Shop, where she studied a Bachelor of Commerce. When she signed up, Cherry was one of only three women, and one of the first to graduate Bachelor of Commerce in 1953. A trailblazer.

Cherry loved fashion, dress design and clothes, first working at Myer and then as a Buyer at Foy and Gibson. Deciding it was time to use her accountancy skills, Cherry then moved to Flack and Flack (now Price Waterhouse), qualifying as a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries. Cherry then joined the Australian Department of Civil Aviation. A new department was opening up in the basement. Cherry recounted the basement was big enough to house something called a “computer.” She was asked to be in charge of the new computer department but turned it down because she could not bear to work where the sun did not shine.

At the age of 26 years old, despite some hesitation, Cherry met her mother Susie and they just clicked. The following year she met her husband Kenneth Lewis McCardel, a very successful accountant, whom she married in 1958 who resided in St. Leonards Court, South Yarra. Margaret “Marmie” Phillip (McKenzie YG 1946 Dec.) was her bridesmaid. Her daughter Louise was born the year after, and son Sam 5 years later. A few years later they moved next door, where she remained for the balance of her life.  Sam says of his Mum, “Mum was a devoted mother and wife to Ken, and after he passed away in 1997, we became much closer and great friends, travelling the world together. Considering that she was 89 when she died, having around 160 attend her funeral at St. Johns, Toorak  was a real testament to the love, friendship and respect she generated in life.”

A Probationer whilst at Tintern, Cherry was the Treasurer of the Tintern Old Girls Association (TOGA later in life). She loved the role, as it afforded her yet another chance to catch up with friends.
